What I learned from this Wonderful Competition

Posted on November 25th, 2008 in Uncategorized by faizahs140  Tagged

During this blogging competition, I have learned various different things. It has helped me in improving my writing skills. For example, I have learned different ways to express myself by using sentence variety instead of just saying “I…”. Because I was able to practice my skills a lot from this competition, now I am going better in it. In school, we go on a website called MYACCESS. There, our teachers are able to give us prompts. We – the students- would go on and writing the best essay we can and then submit it. Then, the program would score our essay the way it would be scored on the Writing/ Grammar FCAT (Our standardized test). Our teachers are able to view what we got and also the website tells us how we can improve our essay and what we did wrong. Afterwards, we could revise it to try and get a better score if we didn’t already. At first, I would always score between a 3.5 to a 4.5. Now I am consistently getting a 6 on my essays (that is the highest you can get). A six on the writing FCAT is a perfect score. I am proud that because of this competition, my writing has improved so much that I am definitely going to get a perfect score on the FCAT.

Another thing that I have learned from this competition is how to type accurately and fast. Now I type 51 words per second. Sometimes I might make a lot of mistakes but other than that, my accuracy is perfecto! In my computer class, we also use a program, well website. It is called CUSTOM TYPING. What you do is you set a goal for yourself and try to achieve it. You go through a lot of practice with individual keys and then at the end, you take a typing test. Pretty much, you can choose any category (I always choose humor) and type three different types of things in the category. For example, with comedy, I would type a bunch of hilarious jokes. Some are long and some are short. Lastly, it finds your average speed and if it meets your goal, you pass and get to set another goal, but if you fail, you retake the typing test.

Lastly, I have learned about several different countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and Portugal. Just by communicating with people from these countries, I am able to learn about them and the similarities and differences that the countries have with the United States. For example, I learned that next month in New Zealand is summer but over here next month is going to be winter. They are two entire seasons ahead of us. It was very interesting to see how much more ahead they are than us. I have also learned about Portugal from a student, filipa. Therefore, I have learned about many different countries. More than what I have listed.

As you can see, I have learned many different things from this competition. Such as, it has improved my writing skills. It has also improved my typing skills and I have learned about many different countries by communicating with them. I am happy that I have done this competition because it as helped me a lot in many different ways like I mentioned.

International Year of the Reef 2008

Did you know that 500 million people depend on coral reefs. They depend on the for various things such as food, protection from a raging storm, recreation and jobs. Sadly, these reefs are being destroyed everday due to our human activites. Some of these activites are just regular fishing, overfishing, deforestation, and pollution. Pollution is a big problem because we don’t even realize that we are polluting our earth and its oceans.  On reefcheck.com, they stated that “threats may continue to build as the global temperature rises”.

Thankfully, there are many types of organization that are trying to help these reefs. One organization or group is called the IYOR (simply, International Year of the Reef). This worldwide campaign is here to raise awareness on how important these reefs are and the threats we put on their homes. Another thing they do is to improve the understanding and take immediate action to help those who have been threatened. The IYOR want to help motivate people to help these suffering reefs that we put in pain.

I chose the topic “International Year of the Reef 2008″ because I feel that not only can I help but we can all help and support the IYOR by doing various things. Also it relates me a lot because I enjoy helping out and this is one thing that I would definitly help coral reef. Some things we can do to help is to continue recycling and not overfish. We don’t realize it but we are the ones that are killing these coral reefs. If we don’t help the IYOR and take action, we will be in a whole lot of trouble. Like I mentioned before, us – humans- depend on these magnificant, colorful reefs for many different things like for food and protection. Imagine what would happen if we didn’t have any more of these left. It wouldn’t be mother nature’s fault, it would be our faults because some of us were being careless and not doing simple things to help like recycling. The Year of the Reef is a very important year and if we all do some simple things, we can help them stay here forever!

Recycling

Recycling Video

Everyone recycles in their own way. My family and I have two recycling bins. We recycle mostly paper because we have a lot of newspaper that we don’t really need. Anyway, occassionally, we would recycle cans and plastic bottle because we have a lot of coke cans and bottles. We also changed all of our lightbulbs into florescent lightbulbs or the ones that don’t hurt the environment.

Now in my school, we just started a new recycling program a few weeks ago. Everytime we need to throw away paper, we put it in the recycling bin. Then every Friday, a few students go around and empty them. I am proud that my family and school are starting to go green and help the environment!

Count Three Out

♥I have checked out many blogs from other countries. But there are some I haven’t seen. Well, a lot that I haven’t seen. To begin with, on the participants page, I first clicked on Kayleigh’s blog. She is from the Netherlands. I liked her blog a lot because her theme was very nice. Then I clicked on Andrea’s. Her blog was funny because it had a south park (cartoon) header. Lastly, I clicked on Edouard. I chose to comment under his post called Twilight. He says that he loves the book and I also love the book so it was the perfect blog that I could comment on. They are all participating in the competition. I chose all of their blogs because they were either very interesting or had something that I liked like how Edouard’s had those posts on Twilight the book. ♥
